Summerville made it illegal to cut a tree without permission back in 1847 — the first town in America to do it. We take trees down, prune the ones staying, and grind the stumps, with the paperwork done right.
The town seal says Sacra Pinus Esto — the pine is sacred — and Summerville means it. Any tree eight inches across at chest height needs a town permit before it comes down, even a dead one, and the big ones go before the Tree Protection Board. What “careful” means on an actual jobsite
It means the climber ropes down limbs instead of letting them find the azaleas on their own. It means a written number before work starts — and the same number after, unless the job itself changed. It means the crew knows an 8-inch trunk from a 7-inch one, because in this town that inch is the difference between a morning’s work and a code violation that starts at a $25 fine in 1847 money and runs much steeper today.

Do I really need a permit to remove a tree on my own property?
Inside Summerville town limits, yes — for any tree eight inches or more in diameter at chest height, alive or dead. The application is $10 and we handle it as part of a removal. Outside town limits, Dorchester County’s rules kick in instead, and they mostly concern grand trees of twenty-four inches and up. The permit guide sorts out which rules apply to your address.
What does removal cost here?
Most Summerville removals run $450 to $1,200. A large pine or oak over a structure runs $900 to $2,000 and sometimes past it, and emergency work after a storm prices two to three times normal, because it is slower, riskier work done in a line of other emergencies. Will you just top my tree so it stays short?
No — and the reason comes with the visit. Topping cuts leave stubs that rot and regrow weakly attached shoots, which is exactly what the next tropical system snaps off. Reduction pruning done at proper points gets you a safer tree that is still a tree.
How fast can you get to storm damage?
During a named-storm week: triage order. A tree on a house outranks a tree on a lawn, whoever called first. Outside of storm weeks, most storm calls get same-day or next-day attention. Either way you get an honest place in line when you call, not a promise built to be broken.
Is stump grinding included in a removal?
It is its own line on the quote, so you can take it or leave it. Taking it at the same visit is the cheap way — the machine is already there. Leaving it costs nothing now and a separate trip charge later.
Do you clear lots?
No. Single-tree and residential work is the whole trade here — removals, pruning, storm response, stumps. If you need acreage taken back wholesale, that’s a different kind of outfit with different machines.
